"The Real Housewives of Potomac," Episode 3: "Hold Your Horses"
I love Monique. I rarely have a strong, positive reaction to a new Housewife. I'm a hardcore Erika Jayne fan now, but her first couple episodes were rough for me. Her first season tag line didn't help. Monique is different. She just seems cool and genuine and her arc tonight with her mother-in-law is super relatable, which helps. I love how she won't back down from Gizelle's ridiculous hazing. She's holding her own. The one black mark against her is her friendship with Charrisse, but I'm trying not to hold that against her.
Let's start with Charrisse. Her mid-life crisis continues full steam ahead. She has decided to turn her house's study into a champagne room. This seems like an idea Charrisse had when she and new age inappropriate buddy Sheldon concocted while they were drunk on champagne but once that champagne haze has faded away you decide maybe not. Not Charrisse though. Armed with a child's sketch and a sledgehammer, construction has begun by the end of the episode. God love Skylar, Charrisse's daughter, who attempts to keep it real with her mom throughout this "process." She is ignored, but she did her due diligence.
Robyn and Gizelle meet for manicures so Robyn can invite Gizelle to join her and the other ladies minus Monique to the Preakness, a local horse race that is part of the Triple Crown. Talk turns to Karen putting Robyn on blast at high tea. Robyn re-iterates that she didn't go to Karen's to explicitly to shit talk Gizelle, but she is not a huge fan of what Gizelle did. Gizelle understands that and it's pretty telling when Gizelle says that she regrets what she did because of how it makes her look. The women seem to be in an OK place, but I'm worried that Gizelle and Robyn's friendship may be headed the way of Bethenny Frankel and Jill Zarin's.
Robyn's only other moments in the episode are when she takes her sons to the dentist for the first time in 2 years, which is especially shocking since her dad is a dentist. Gurl. Robyn's main storyline is her relationship with Juan and whenever she talks about it, like with the hairstylist, it just seems like a re-hash of what we've heard before. Robyn is hesitant to commit to Juan again because of the past cheating, they are together for their kids, it's complicated, etc. It may be complicated, but it's not very enjoyable to watch.
Gizelle continues to show her ass when it comes to Monique. I sometimes wonder if Gizelle remembers that she is being filmed. You want to shade Monique for rapping at high tea, when you asked her to do it. Was it a trap? A gotcha moment? If so, it wasn't a great one. Yes, Monique said she had four houses, but it was because Gizelle tried to shade her about being homeless. It seems Gizelle knows she is fighting a losing battle, but she is valiantly continuing on.
At the Preakness, Gizelle is telling the ladies all about Kevin, but then she meets a millionaire named Don, so... I'm not saying Gizelle is a gold digger, but she does, so I don't have to. Which is nice. Seriously, when Don is talking about the horses he owns and how he's won $6 million before, I'm pretty sure I saw Gizelle's eyes turn to dollar signs like in a cartoon. Don't count those chickens Kevin.
Karen finally gets what she's wanted since Rayvin left for college. Rayvin back in the house. Let the helicopter parenting begin again! The only thing I could focus on during this whole conversation was Rayvin's disgust on having to eat a Philly cheesesteak. Really? Cheesesteaks are delicious. You need go get your mind right and your life together. I won't even entertain you.
Ashley really lives to knock the other ladies relationships which is not a great look since her own is in obvious trouble. It was nice to see Ashley and Michael having fun at the indoor skydiving place and I'm happy they both seem committed to making things work, but Ashley should keep her opinions to herself. Glass houses and all that. It was nice to hear the other ladies encourage her when it comes to OZ and offer any assistance they can give. It seemed genuine and like they want Ashley to succeed.
Monique is divorced from any drama with the other ladies because she's in Alabama where Chris is being inducted into the Alabama Football Hall of Fame. That doesn't mean she's drama free though. When she's getting ready to leave, she's having some wine time with her friend, Gigi, and when she mentions that she is friends with Charrisse, wife of Eddie Jordan, Gigi's ears perk up. She lets it go pretty quickly, but there is definitely something there.
Monique's Alabama trip is not drama-free. Her mother-in-law, Shirley, sees to that. She is constantly making asides to people during their dinner. She is super pleased with herself and good for Monique for letting those things roll down her back like water. Monique keeps it moving, which is more than I would have done. Chris finally puts a pin in it, but Shirley firmly believes she put that heifer in her place, heifer being Monique.
What do you guys think? Was Shirley being super inappropriate? How would you have handled it? Should Chris stick up for Monique more? Does Ashley need to keep her marital opinions to herself? Is Gizelle fighting a losing battle with Monique? Should Robyn leave Juan? Let me know in the comments.
