Pretty Little Liars Recap: What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?

Pretty Little Liars, Episode 17, "Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Inferno

After last week's fast paced, revelation filled episode, Tuesday night's episode felt a little slow and also felt like a little bit of a disappointment.  I will say that while this episode was the very definition of filler, I will say that Troian Bellisario continued to kick ass.  Spencer is coming apart at the seams.  She  is lying to the other Liars about Toby being part of the "A" team.  The only person she lets it slip to is Emily.  She freaks out in class and leaves.  She falls for an "A" text masquerading as a text from Aria and flips her shit on Ezra in the park.  I love watching Spencer unravel.  I think I've made it pretty clear that she is by far my favorite character on the show, and it is nice to see her be something other than calm, cool, collected, and mildly superior to everyone else.

Emily receives a package from Nate's (aka Maya's murderer) parents that is filled with cards that Em made for Allison back when she was in love with her.  Seriously, though, why did these seemingly bright, intelligent girls, blindly follow this horrible skank?  I don't get it.  Maybe it's one of those teenage girl things, that guys will never understand.  I'm going to go with that.  There is also a Biology notebook that Em gave Allie to help her study.  In the back is a written conversation between Allie and someone the girls can't identify.  In the notebook, Allie writes about confronting Toby in juvie.  She suspects him of being "A."  First, can we talk about the way Toby is dressed when he is in juvie?  What the hell?  Is he trying to impress a Latino gang?  Was his hair in cornrows under that doo rag?  So many questions.  Toby denies being "A", but he wishes he knew who it was so he could help them out.  Emily drops this knowledge bomb on Spencer and it's then that she tells Em about her and Toby's breakup.  Ems also finds out through the notebook, that Allison was at the Cape with Too Old to be Her Friend, CeCe.  Allie mentions beach guy in the notes, who seems vaguely threatening.  Emily talks to CeCe about Beach Guy and she is not helpful because "there were a lot of guys."  Of course there were.  CeCe does drop a bomb on Emily, that Allison thought she might be preggers.  Could Beach Guy be the baby daddy?

Speaking of baby daddies, Aria continues to flounder on whether or not she should tell Ezra about his unknown son.  Luckily, Aria has a friend who is emotionally unstable to take care of that for her.  Spencer receives a text, obvi from "A" masquerading as Aria, that says Ezra broke up with her because she lied about his kiddo.  Spence tears out of there on her bike.  Her bike?  What?  She confronts Fitz in the park, who has no idea what she's talking about, but it's too late.  Once she realizes what she's done, Spence books but the damage has been done.  Ezra confronts Aria at school.  I wonder if Ezra ever looks at moments like this and ever decides to take stock of his life choices.  After Ezra storms out, Aria gets a text from "A" confirming that s/he is behind this.  Aria goes to see Spencer wanting to talk.  Spencer snaps, telling Aria that they shouldn't blame "A" for every bad thing that happens to them and that maybe they deserve what is happening to them.  Harsh, Spence.  Aria storms out.  Aria ends up meeting Ezra who tells her that he isn't angry with her and after confronting his baby mama he is leaving to go meet his son.  Things are not looking great for Ezria here.

Hanna has learned that Caleb and Paige are working together and that they are the ones who stabbed the mad cow brain in MonA's locker.  Hanna follows Paige to a bar that is either a lesbian bar or is having lesbian night.  Who knew Rosewood was soo progressive and that there were that many lesbians in it.  Hanna spies Paige getting awfully cozy with another lady, she also accepts a drink and ends up getting arrested when drink buyers girlfriend throws the drink in her face.  Ashley be not proud when she bails her daughter out of the clink.  Hanna responds to her mother something like this:  "MOOOM, I, LIKE, HAD NO IDEA IT WAS A LESBIAN BAR.  NO BIG DEAL.  WHATEVER."  Ashley accepts this and tells her to use the hot rinse on her hair.  Um... OK.

Emily meets up with Hanna at the police station and Detective Douche Wilden confiscates the notebook.  They see a picture that shows that Wilden was at the Cape at the same time Allison was.  Are they going to imply that everyone may have killed Allison?  Who's turn will it be next week?  Ella's?  Spencer hires a PI to investigate Caleb and find out what the "A" key opens.

The episode ends with "A" lining up bobblehead dolls of the girls.  Where did s/he get those?  Who made them?  Is it weird that I want a set?  S/he ends up lighting the head of the Hanna bobble on fire.  Things are not looking good for our dimwitted friend.

So, did you guys think this ep was mostly filler?  Would you join a Latino gang with Toby as long as he promised to always be shirtless?  Let me know in the comments.
