RuPaul's Drag Race Recap: Mother (Ru)Dahling

RuPaul's Drag Race, Episode 5: "Snatch Game"

Oh yeah.  On the most recent episode they played everyone's favorite game, The Snatch Game!!  Seriously, this is everyone's favorite challenge, right?  I mean, it has to be.  It gives the queens a chance to showcase their acting and comedic chops and it has been a highlight of RPDR since it debuted back in season 2.  I've been saying all season that a lot of these queens are resting on their pretty faces and this challenge kind of reinforced it.  There were not as many LOL worthy moments during the game as there typically is and all of them pretty much came from Jinkx Monsoon.

The mini challenge was a take on US Weekly's who wore it best.  The queens broke into three, they were each given the same shrug and they had to make it memorable.  Then, US Weekly editor picked a winner from each group.  The three winners were Detox, Roxxxy, and Alyssa.  Jinkx was in Alyssa's group and I have to say she was robbed.  Jinkx totally should have taken it for her dead on impression of Mary Kate Olsen.  It was then that Ru dropped the  main challenge.  It's Snatch Game, y'all!!  Jinkx was living for the challenge immediately, some of the other queens, not so much.  Jinkx made a great point.  At this point in the show's history, you know that Snatch Game is coming.  You should come to Drag Race with a celebrity impersonation in your back pocket.  I'm not sure why you wouldn't'.  It also needs to be someone you can make funny.  Not all celebrities are funny or are ripe for satire.

Jinkx told the other dolls that she was going to bust out her Lil' Edie impersonation.  Just like Diana Ross last episode, I couldn't believe how many of the queens had never heard of "Grey Gardens."  Seriously, children.  Learn your history.  You don't have to love it, but you should at least be aware of it.  Jinkx was getting a lot of flak from the other queens this episode.  I feel like campy queens get a bad rap from the more "glamorous" queens on the show.  There is this idea that they are somehow less than and it is frustrating.  I'm not sure about other fans, but I watch the show because I want to see more than just pretty queens.  I want to see queens who can bring the funny, not just when they are throwing shade, but when they are in challenges and on the runway and when they are performing at your local club.

Oh Lineysha.  In the first couple episodes, I had you singled out as the one to beat.  You sort of reminded me of the Other Tyra, Tyra Sanchez, but then it all just sort of fell apart.  Michelle Obama?  I think Ru and I gave you similar looks when we found out that you were going to try to do Michelle.  Celia Cruz was a much better choice, but you brought nothing to it.  Nothing.  I also hate that you use your lack of English knowledge as an excuse.  Jessica Wild and Yara Sofia both spoke limited English, but they excelled.  They worked with what they have and it was fierce, most of the time.

And Detox.  You know I love you, but that Ke$ha impersonation was serously lacking.  Also, pretending to pee in front of the panel reeked of desperation.  You are better than that.  Hopefully, being in the bottom two was a wake up call and you will go back to being the one to beat next week.  Note to future queens, don't try to satirize someone you know, because you go easy on them because you don't want to offend.  That is no good.  It makes for bad comedy.

The actual Snatch Game beonged to Jinkx Monsoon.  Her Lil' Edie was flawless.  My sides hurt from laughing so hard.  Honorable meniton to Alaska for her Lady Bunny.  Thank goodness for those two queens because if not for them, this would have been the lamest Snatch Game in RPDR history.

Also, how upset was I that Alyssa Edwards had immunity from the last challenge.  It seemed like she just slapped on a blue wig and thought that was enough to be Katy Perry.  I'm not sure why she didn't do Kim Zolciak.  In fact, I'm not sure why more of the queens don't do more of the Housewives.  They lend themselves very easily to being lampooned.

The runway went much like you would expect it to.  Jinkx ended up winning the challenge, but not before getting a dressing down from Michelle Visage about how she can't do glamour.  It's frustrating to me to hear this.  Everyone has a different definition of glamour and just becuase you don't fit that definition doesn't mean that they are less than.

Detox and Lineysha were in the bottom two.  Detox lip smacked Lineysha with her animated, cartoony, lip sync and Lineysha sashayed away.

So, what did you guys think of this year's Snatch Game?  Were you kind of let down like I was?  Are you loving Jinkx as much as I am?  If not, water of a duck's back.  Sound off in the comments.
