RuPaul's Drag Race Recap: So You Think You Can Dance?

RuPaul's Drag Race, Episode 4: "Black Swan: Why It Gotta Be Black?"

RuPaul's Drag Race always seems to have it's finger on the pulse of what is hot in pop culture right now.  Dance is definitely having a moment.  So You Think You Can Dance is the American Idol of the summer.  It was recently renewed for a tenth season.  Dance Moms on Lifetime is one of the most popular show on the network.  ABC Family has Bunheads.  I think people are fascinated by dance and it is awesome to see it being elevated as a sport.  It has spent too much time kind of on the outskirts of acceptable sports.  Come on.  If NASCAR is a sport, dance definitely is.  So, it is not surprising that dance has come to the race.

It was all dance all the time.  The mini challenge was one of the best and most fun I have ever seen on the show.  The queens donned afro wigs and had a Soul Train style dance party.  Ru picked the top two booty shakers to be team captains.  That's right, Coco Montrese.  It is another team challenge!  The winners were Jinkx Monsoon and Coco Montrese.  I am loving Jinkx.  She is fun and sassy.  She is hilarious.  She has personality for days.  I know that RPDR has been accused of having a problem with the more campy queens, but I'm hoping that Jinkx will buck this trend and make it all the way to the top.  I could see her taking the crown.

The teams were broken down like this.  Team Monsoon was Jinkx, Alaska, Jade Jolie, Lineysha Sparxx and Ivy Winters.  Team Coco consisted of Alyssa Edwards, Detox, Honey Mahogany, Roxxxy Andrews, and Vivienne Pinay.  Um... Coco picked Alyssa first?  Wha huh?  The entire room went silent.  In her one on one, Coco revealed that she was in it to win it and apparently Alyssa owns a dance studio?  Um.... OK.  Sure.  Why not?

The main challenge was to peform a ballet based on Ru's life called "No RuPaulogies."  I live!  I hope Willam is getting royalties.  Team Monsoon peformed Act 1, while team Coco took care of Act 2.

Vivienne Pinay. Seriously?  What the fuck is your deal?  The whole episode you are throwing massive amounts of shade behind Roxxxy's back and I can't figure out why?  Is it because you have the personality of a dead fish?  Is it because that you are utterly forgettable and you know it?  Did you know that you weren't long for the competition?  Did  you give up immediately when you were assigned the role of America's Next Drag Superstar because you knew you didn't have what it takes to pull it off?  I'm not sure what your main issue was but everytime your sour face showed up on my computer screen, I just wanted to smack ya.

The queens were coached by season 1 SYTYCD winner Nick Lazzarini and former contestant turned choreographer Travis Wall.  I'm not sure what happened during this segment, because I just couldn't stop staring at Nick.  From what I gathered, Alaska can't dance, neither can Vivienne and Roxy and there are too many queens on this show who don't know who Diana Ross is.  Homo say what?

The actual performances were actually pretty decent and highly entertaining.  I would say, on the whole, Team Monsoon was the better team.  I could be biased, because it was Team Monsoon that brought us this:

It's Alaska as Mama Ernestine!!

It was Alyssa Edwards who took the win as Dark Ru.  The Black Swan to Coco's White Swan.  I am not Alyssa's biggest fan, but she is a good dancer, definitely the best out of the queens.  I was kind of hoping she'd humiliate herself after all that talk about how she loves to dance.  Alas, she done brought it and won the challenge, along with immuinty.

The bottom two queens were Vivienne, for her general blahness, and Honey Mahogany for her beyond lackluster portrayal of Ru's idol, the legendary Ms. Ross.  Honey was also called out for serving Mama Cass realness week after week with her hideous caftans.  The lip sync was terribly lackluster.  There was no energy.  No one was lip syncing for their lives.  It came as no surprise when Ru sent both queens home.  That's right.  A double elimination bitches!  Good riddance to Vivienne and Honey I say.

But what say you, fellow watchers.  Were you surprised at the double elimination?  Do you think one of them deserved to stay?  Who do you think is going to take the crown?  Let me know in the comments.
