The Real Housewives of New York City Recap: Sonja Morgan's Home for Wayward Girls

"The Real Housewives of New York City," Episode 2: "It Girl, Interrupted"

I'm not sure Bethenny knows what a sexy Halloween costume is. That's not a read. I love her "Josie and the Pussycats" style cat costume, but when she comments to Carole that her vagina is hanging out, I'm wondering if she is looking at the same costume we are. I'm also thinking that Bethenny should go back to her long hair. I love how she looks in that wig. Let The Countess Mrs. D'Agostino rock the short look. There's more to this episode than just Bethenny's Halloween costume, unfortunately, a lot of it has to do with new cast member, Tinsley Mortimer, who is super boring, unless you care about mugshots and what makes a socialite. If you, like me, don't really care so much about that, this episode doesn't have much for you. Let's dive in anyway.

"The Real Housewives of New York City" has always had this weird relationship with the idea of and the reality of the socialite. In a city like New York, this show could be full of them, but it has shied away from that, sort of making the statement that they aren't interesting or are big jokes. The show has had two self-proclaimed socialites on the show, Kelly Killoren-Bensimon and Sonja Morgan. These ladies have been really played for laughs. They aren't taken seriously. They aren't relatable. In Sonja's case, they are kind of pathetic. Shuffling around a rundown town home they can't afford, giving away outdated clothes while reminiscing about relationships with famous people and royalty that may or may not have happened.

The show seems to be going a different route with it's newest cast member, fallen socialite, Tinsley Mortimer. According to RHONY, Tinsley was the "It Girl" a few years ago, back when she was married to Topper. I couldn't make these names up. Topper and Tinsley (groan) were married for 15 years and have been divorced for three. Tinsley has replaced Luann as Sonja's newest houseguest which inspired Carole's quip that I used to title this recap. Tinsley had been living in Palm Springs, until she had a bad break-up which resulted in her getting arrested, hence the mugshot she can't stop talking about. Apparently, she went back to her exes house to retrieve a handbag not knowing that he had a no trespass order against her. Bing, bang, boom. Arrested. Whatever.

It seems as if Tinsley's entire storyline is going to be her trying regain her social status in NYC, which is boring AF. I don't want to watch her shop. I don't think anyone cares about how one becomes an "It Girl," and I don't think cameras only notice girls with curled hair. Tinsley has some decent moments. She has a good rapport with Sonja. It's nice to see someone just accept the Lady Morgan for who she is. The awkward way that she mentioned her arrest and mug shot to everyone she came across was sort of endearing. I was a little over her dig at Bethenny for not being "warmer" to her when they met. I don't think Bethenny owed Tinsley anything. Bethenny is an easy target since she already has a reputation for being mean and cold and blah blah.

The stuff happening on the periphery of the episode is where the action is. Dorinda is ready to go after Sonja. She's had it. When she meets Ramona for cryotherapy and Ramona claims that Sonja hasn't mentioned Dorinda to her at all, Dorinda is all of us when she rolls her eyes. We also get the first glimpse of Dorinda's horrible daughter, Hannah, since her debut season. Her hair is shorter and her eyebrows are as awful as ever.

Ramona is acting as shifty as ever when she meets Carole and Bethenny at Bethenny's apartment. She refuses to take off her shoes because she feels better with shoes on. Kicks one of Bethenny's new puppies and then she is upset that Bethenny didn't tell her that she got them. Is that a thing? You e-mail or call or text your friends when you get a new pet? It's odd. It doesn't make sense for Ramona to be that upset. She's up to something. Carole's not taking any chances though so she makes sure to tell Ramona about her new kittens.

At Sonja's Mad Hatter Tea Party, there is a nary a hat, a bright color or a Dorinda to be found. The e-vite said to wear bright colors something that Carole, Ramona and Tinsley all ignored. Carole and Ramona claim they missed that part, but Tinsley is just ready to wear black after all her time on the color drenched streets of Miami. There's not a lot of action at the tea party. Ramona and Carole spar a little on politics and whether or not Ramona should come to Carole's election night party. Ramona lets it slip that she dis-invited Sonja from staying at her Hamptons house since Dorinda is going to be staying there. Sorry Singer. Change of plans and dis-invite are the same thing. Luann and Sonja have a sit down about Tom. Sonja really needs to let all this go. Yes, the odds of Tom and Luann's marriage lasting are super low. yes, maybe it was not great for Dorinda to not invite her to the Berkshires, but you just look bitter and petty at this point. Move on.

What did you guys think of Tinsley? Is she interesting? Did I miss something? How about Ramona and her hickeys? Is Sonja beating a dead horse? Let me know in the comments.
