RuPaul's Drag Race, Episode 3: "Scream Queens"
You can count on certain things with reality shows. American Idol is going to have theme weeks. Project Runway has unconventional challenges. There is going to be an auction on Survivor. RuPaul's Drag Race is not different and this week they trotted out one of their tried and true challenges: a movie parody. This year the dolls divided up into two teams to shoot movie trailers for a horror film called Drag Race Me to Hell, one set in the 1960's and one set in the 1980's. The lines are still pretty clearly drawn between the two groups of queens. They aren't fans of each other and they are sticking pretty closely with their original groups. This challenge showed that one set is clearly superior to the other and there was some surprising choices made by Ru and the other judges. Let's take a look at how everything shook out.
The second set of queens entered the workroom and found themselves mug to mug with the other queens. There was plenty of shade thrown and none of it was subtle. They tried to play nice and hug, but Bianca wasn't having any of it. I know there are probably a lot of people out there who don't like how aggressive Bianca is, but I love it. I think she is absolutely right that these younger queens like Adore, Gia, and Laganja think that just because they look fishy that they can coast or that things should be handed to them. They will be in for a rude awakening.
The next day, Ru has the queens pair up with someone not in the original group for the mini challenge. The ladies go to the beach with someone the bikini top and one the bikini bottom. It was really hilarious to watch these queens work together. In the end, Ru gave the win to Adore and Milk. I probably would have handed it to Courtney and Laganja, they routinely had me cracking up and when they showed a split screen of all the queens, I couldn't take my eyes off them.
Ru made Adore and Milk team captains and they picked teams playground style. It was no surprise that they chose the queens from their original groups and that Vivacious and Trinity were the last queens picked for their respective teams. Ru handed out the scripts and left them to it. Team Adore got the script set in the 1980's and Team Milk got the 1960's script. Adore was the leader you'd expect. She took the role she wanted and then haphazardly handed out parts to the other queens, not really thinking about it. The only part that really made sense was DeLa as the old mother, but I think that was more luck than anything else. You knew this team was in trouble when Gia admitted that she had never heard of a DeLorean before.
Team Milk seemed to be chugging right along without any issues. The only weak link seemed to be Trinity who copped to not having any acting experience. She wanted some pointers, she almost begged for them, but as Bianca pointed out, as soon as she gave Trinity an idea, Trinity became super defensive. That seems to be Trinity's go to emotion. She can't take a joke. She can't really take any sort of slight criticism from the other queens, like when Bianca was talking to her about impersonating Beyoncé in Vegas. Um… get a grip, Trinity.
When it came time to shoot the actualy scenes, it went about as well as could be expected. Courtney and Bianca were fantastic. They have been doing things like this and have experience and it was effortless. Trinity struggled. She had her back to the camera and Ru had to get up and show her what to do. Not really a good sign. The real surprises were Joslyn and Darienne. Joslyn really played up her ditzy persona and it worked well. The uttered GASP's killed me and Darienne could have faded into the background with her head in a box performance, but she brought a lot of personality and spunk to the role.
The other team were a hot damn mess. It was obvious they hadn't rehearsed at all. They didn't really know a lot of their lines. April was the least butch person ever. Seriously. Johnny Weir is butcher than that bitch. Vivacious was the head for Team Adore and she struggled and that is being generous. You couldn't really understand what she was saying. It was more word salad than anything else.
The queens hit the Main Stage in their best drag and I have to say some of the queens have a broad definition of the word "best." Gia wore a shiny black catsuit with some weird purple and green octopus headdress. It was like she was trying to be a sexy Ursula. Adore's outfit was a mess. It looked like she was trying to serve goth, mermaid ill-fitting realness.
A lot of the queens did bring it. Bianca was dressed to the nines in a shimmery black dress. Courtney was showing her Aussie bride in a sequined blue dress patterned with the Austrailian flag. I was really impressed with Laganja's ensemble. I dug the butterfly headdress and her sleek short waved hair.
It was not a shock that Team Milk walked off with the win and Darienne was the winner of the challenge. Good for her. Maybe Darienne will defy expectations and make it farther than I originally thought. Team Adore was worse than what I thought they would be. It was so bad that their best takes were so bad I thought maybe it was a joke. April's terrible butch lesbian and Vivacious' mumbly head landed them in the bottom two and after a pretty fierce lip sync Vivacious sashayed away.
Were you sad to see Vivacious go? Are you surprised that Adore keeps avoiding the bottom two? How do you feel about Bianca? Hit the comments.
