RuPaul's Drag Race, Episode 11: "Glitter Ball"
It wouldn't be a season of reality television if there wasn't a big shock and this episode contained two. We had the shocking elimination of early front runner, BenDeLaCreme, and Adore overcoming her lack of sewing skillz to win the biggest sewing challenge of the season. I'm super late on these recaps, but the sting of DeLa's elimination still smarts.
The mini challenge was to have the queens drag up some puppets to lampoon some of their fellow queens. DeLa brought it with this challenge. She easily won by lampooning front runner, Bianca Del Rio. It was hilarious and spot on. The big hair, giant teeth, how she had Puppet Bianca call everyone ASSHOLES and shot BALONEY! She was the clear winner.
When it came time to announce the main challenge, Ru announced it was time for the annual ball. This time it was the Glitter Ball. The queens each needed to create three different looks: Banjee Girl Bling, Executive Realness and Dripping with Jewels Eleganza. They were each assigned a different jewel by DeLa since she won the mini challenge. DeLa gave sapphire to Bianca, ruby to Courtney, diamond to Adore, topaz to Darienne and rose quartz to herself.
Adore melted down pretty quickly. I think her confidence was still pretty shaken after doing so abysmally in the wedding challenge last episode. She can't sew, she couldn't figure out what to do. She broke down to Ru in the workroom when she did her walkthrough. This could have foreshadowed Adore's exit from the competition, but it was not to be. This segment foreshadowed Adore rising from the ashes and winning this week's challenge. I have to point out that she did end up win because of some help from Bianca. Bianca took some time out to help Adore figure out how to make a tutu to go with her diamond encrusted corset.
When it comes to DeLa's elimination, I just don't get it. Did she have the best outfits? No. Her Banjee girl suffered from those giant loufa looking things, her executive realness read as the madam of a 1940's brothel and her final look was a little showgirl, but I don't think that was a bad thing. All of Darienne's looks were hot messes though. That rainbow jumpsuit? Oy. Why would you wear something like that? I think Darienne had done a great job of dressing to flatter her shape, but this was not flattering at all. It made her look like the Michelin woman. Her last look was terrible, too. Princess Leia? Not at all. I'm surprised Carrie Fisher didn't appear just to backhand her.
Adore went on to win and then it was time for DeLa and Darienne to lip sync for their lives. The rematch and this time someone was going to go home. Darienne is a fantastic lip syncer, but she is not a more impressive queen then DeLa. I'm not sure what Ru was thinking, but I was super sad when DeLa sashayed away. She was very humble and sweet and because I thought it was hilarious here is her full goodbye mirror message:
"Dear top 4 - howz it going? I'm pretty good. Sometimes you have to have Mama Ru yell atcha a bunch of times before it sinks in. I guess I never reached that number of times, Darian. I knew the second I was up against you I waz out the door. You get it lady. I wish you all the luck in the world and only harbor enough resentment to write a long pointless message that you will have to clean and clean and clean and clean. But fo real tho you girlz are my heroes. XX BDLC."
Awww. Bye BenDeLaCreme. Gone too soon.
