Fall TV Preview: Glee Season 5

What Will Glee Look Like Without Finn?

This summer, Gleeks everywhere were shocked by the news of star Cory Monteith's premature death of a drug overdose.  After the initial shock wore off, everyone was wondering what Fox's musical high school dramedy would do next.  Two months later, we have our answer and it's not what you maybe thought, as Glee kicks off it's fifth season with a two episode tribute to the Beatles.  For more on the upcoming season, hit the jump.
Where We Left Off:  New Directions redeemed themselves by winning Regionals after their loss at Sectionals.  It wasn't all smiles though, as Brittany (Heather Morris) left McKinley High for early admission at MIT. (I know, I know.)  Rachel (Lea Michele) had her callback for the Broadway bound revival of Funny Girl.  Finn (Cory Monteith) was MIA for the last two episodes of the season due to Monteith's rehab stint, explained on the show as Finn focusing on college.  Blaine (Darren Criss) was fingering a ring case, waiting on the right moment to propose to Kurt (Chris Colfer).  For a more in depth look at the season finale, you can find my recap here.

What To Expect:  Rather than confront Finn's fate right out of the gate, creator Ryan Murphy, along with EP's, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, decided to go ahead with a pre-planned two episode tribute to The Beatles.  Throughout the two episode premiere, the cast will sing fourteen of the Fab Four's greatest hits.  We will also be introduced to one of season five's big name guest stars with Demi Lovato showing up as a potential love interest for Naya Rivera's, Santana.  We should get more resolution regarding Rachel and Funny Girl, and movment on the Klaine marriage front, though I wouldn't expect an answer right away if Blaine does pop the question.  The other big name joining the cast this season is American Idol eighth-season runner up, Adam Lambert, as a rival for Kurt.  Also, Sue is the principal of McKinley, after the whole gun cover up thing.  Yeah.  The best thing to do with something like this is just go with it.

All eyes will be on this season's third episode, set to air October 10th, which will be Finn/Cory's tribute/farewell episode.  Murphy has said that Finn's death will not mirror Monteith's, which I think is a fantastic decision.  He has described the episode as more of a celebration of both lives, rather than a maudlin affair, though if I were you, I'd have some tissues handy.  It's being reported that Rachel will not appear until the last third of the episode, and seeing as how Michele was Monteith's real life boyfriend, well, like I said, box of tissues, maybe two.

After the Finn episode, Glee will go on an hiatus of undisclosed length.  My guess, the show will return sometime in November in order to take advantage of the sweeps period.  What will a Finn-less Glee look like?  We won't know until then.  I'm hoping that even if there is a time jump, which I assume there will be, they don't try to partner Rachel up.  It just wouldn't seem organic and I think the fans would revolt.

So, are  you excited for tonight?  Are you still upset about the loss of Finn?  Are you happy to have a couple of weeks to prepare?  What do you want from the show when it returns?  Hit me up in the comments.
