Should Grey's Anatomy End?
Tonight is the 10th(!) season premiere of ABC's medical hit, Grey's Anatomy. It has overcome a lot. There was the gay slur that Isaiah Washington hurled at co-star T.R. Knight during the show's heyday. There was ghost sex. There was Gizzie. Derek and Meredith broke up and made up and broke up and got Post-It married and then got officially married and adopted a baby and then had a real baby. There have been bombs, ferry crashes, sink holes, gunmen loose in the halls of the hospital and a plane crash. Through it all, the show has remained one of the top dramas on TV. This season, the show is set to suffer what may be its biggest loss to date. A few weeks ago, it was announced that original cast member, Sandra Oh, would be leaving after this season. A lot of people, myself included, feel like the real core relationship of the show isn't Mer and Der, but Mer and her person, Cristina. Even if everyone signs on for another season, should the show continue without Cristina Yang. For that and a look at where we left off and where the new season is headed, hit the jump.
Where We Left Off: A freak storm hit Seattle and everyone was affected, including the doctors at the newly christened Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Meredith ended up going into labor, as parts of the hospital were without power. After an emergency C-Section, Mer ended up giving birth to a healthy baby boy named Jared Bailey Shepherd. April re-thinks her engagement to paramedic, Matthew, after an ambulance explosion where she fears Jackson dead. After a season long battle about amputating her leg, you think that Callie and Arizona are in a good place. Not so much. Arizona cheats on Callie with a visiting doctor and Callie finds out, leading to a blowout that all leads back to the plane crash and Arizona's emergency amputation. Oh, and as the episode ends, we find out that Weber was electrocuted while attempting to get the power back on.
What Can We Expect: The fate of Richard Weber should be resolved by the end of the two hour premiere. The previews we have seen intimate that someone is going to die, but I would be shocked if it turned out to be Richard, that would be too easy. Arizona's fling has left the hospital, but her presence is still felt, as Callie deals with this newest betrayal and deals with having her spouse cheat on her for a second time. Remember, George cheated on Callie with Izzie, while they were married. It seems like it'll be a long way back for Calzona, if they are able to find their way back to each other at all. Meredith will attempt to juggle motherhood with her career and the process of running a hospital will weigh heavily on all of the new owners.
All signs point to this being the season of Cristina Yang. Sandra Oh did the writers and creator, Shonda Rhimes, a service by letting them know of her plans to not return this early. This gives them time to craft a fitting send off for one of television's best characters (yeah, I said it). I'm sure that Oh will knock them out of the park and will, hopefully, finally win that long deserved Emmy.
Oh isn't the only cast member that may decide to up and leave Seattle before the season is up. All the original cast members' contracts are up at the end of this season, so there is a chance that we may be waving good-bye to more of our favorites, including the show's namesake, Meredith Grey. Rhimes has been firm that she doesn't see this as the last season and envisions the show going longer, even as cast members, should they decide to, leave. Renaming the hospital solves the problem of keeping the Grey in Grey's Anatomy, even if Ellen Pompeo should decide to exit stage left. The question is: should the show continue?
I've never really looked at Grey's as being similar to ER. For me, this show is all about the characters, so if the characters that you care about and have been following for 10 years leave, is there a reason to stick around? It'll be interesting to see how they handle Yang's swan song. I'm hoping that she just leaves and doesn't die, because I can't imagine a world where Meredith Grey doesn't have her person. I'm torn. There is something to be said for a show bowing out gracefully, but to be fair, the older it's gotten, the better it's gotten, so I don't feel like it's worn out it's welcome quite yet.
What do you think blog readers? Should the show continue if the core characters leave? Can you imagine a Grey's without Cristina? Do you want to? Are you dreading May? Do you have faith that the show can keep it up without her? Let me know in the comments.
