The Voice, Episode 2: "The Blind Auditions: Part 2"
Three-time Voice winning coach, Blake Shelton, came roaring back this episode, using that pointing finger and sheepish grin to start adding contestants to his team. This episode really kept upping the ante on the talent and the ladies continue to bring it. Let's take a look at the contestants who scored a coveted spot on one of the coaches team.
16-year-old, Jacquie Lee is an Italian Jersey girl, who I'm surprised didn't utter the word Guidette during her pre-performance package. Her performance of Amy Winehouse's, "Back to Black," was pretty enough, but largely forgettable. She ended up going over to Team Xtina, but it's not a good sign when the most exciting thing about your performance are your boots.
Barry Black, 27, plays a mean mouth horn and I'm pretty sure it worked in his favor. I think Adam and Blake hit their buttons just so they could see what was making that noise. Barry's serviceable rendition of Bobby Caldwell's, "What You Won't Do For Love," wouldn't have been strong enough to justify a coach turn if it wasn't for that. Team Adam scored their first contestant of the night.
Destinee Quinn, 20, is not who would think of when you would think of a biker bar, but that is her day job. She performs at a local biker bar and she is just cute as a button. It's too bad that what she looks like matters little to the coaches at this stage of the game. Destinee's vocal on the Dixie Chicks', "Cowboy Take Me Away" was shakier than a Jenga tower during an all night game. Her breath control was terrible, her voice disappeared during the lower parts of the song and became shrill when she reached for high notes that were just out of her grasp. Despite this, she still convinced Cee Lo and Xtina to turn their chairs and she ended up taking the second slot of the night on Team Xtina.
I pretty much fell head over heels in love with Cole Vosbury, 22, when he introduced us to his grandmother, Nita Lynn. She toured with rock greats, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley, and the country icon, Johnny Cash. I was hanging on her every word as she told Carson all about how she turned down Elvis. I was praying for this kid to be great, because I need more Nita Lynn in my life. I was not disappointed. I was feeling Cole's Dirty South, country/soul rendition of "Movin' On Up." Luckily, Cee Lo did too. He was the only one who turned around, which is fine with me, because I think Cole will be a great addition to Team Cee Lo.
Anti-social, pancake waitress, Holly Henry, 19, brought Coldplay's "The Scientist to The Voice stage. At first, I was not a huge fan of Holly's. I'm not sure if the song was in the right key for her, but those lower notes were rough. I'm not sure if she could have found the pitch with a map. She totally got me though, when she hit those crisp, clear high notes and I was on board with the four chair turn. Team Blake snatched up Holly, getting his first vocalist of the night.
25-year-old, scooter tour guide, Austin Jenckes was able to breathe new life into Lynyrd Skynyrd's, "Simple Man." The song is an audition staple for most competition reality shows, but with his raspy, growl, Austin was able to breathe new life into it, subtly twisting the melody in just the right ways. He was the next member of Team Blake.
E.G. Daily, 51, may have been familiar to you, even if you didn't recognize her face. She is a famous voice actor, who brought to life Tommy Pickles of Rugrats, among others. She was also Dottie in one of the best films ever made, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. I was a fan of E.G.'s voice. She had a cool raspy, rock sound, especially when she hit those high notes. I'm just not sure if Faith Hill's "Breathe" was the best choice for her. Apparently, she fashions herself a country rock singer, so she chose to become a member of Team Blake.
Jonny Gray, 29, is a former MP in Air Force. You really felt for the guy when Carson asked him about his time in the service and he got kind of choked up. I really started to root for the guy. Alas, this isn't The Backstory, it's The Voice. Jonny's was pretty good. I was ready to be super harsh on his version of The Killers' "All These Things That I've Done," but I liked it. Jonny wasn't trying to be Brandon Flowers. He made the song his own, rather than do straight up karaoke. After battling Adam, Team Cee Lo gained another member.
Talk about saving the best for last. You knew that Tessanne Chin, 28, was going to be awesome, because she scored the coveted last performance pimp slot. I wasn't prepared for just how awesome she was. The Jamaican born Chin was previously a back up singer for singer and Jamaican royalty, Jimmy Cliff. You'd think that she would have sang a reggae song, but no, she brought the house down with P!nk's "Try." So many superlatives for Chin's voice. Awesome. Gorgeous. Chills from the first note. There was almost a brawl between the coaches, but in the end, Team Adam scored the contestant I think could win it all.
So what did you guys think? Are you Team Tessanne? Who do you think has the strongest team so far? Did she get those shoes from Aldo? Let me know in the comments.
