The Voice Recap: So You've Won Three Times...

The Voice, Episode 3: "The Blind Auditions: Part 3"

Tonight, Blake Shelton decided to bring out the big guns.  Yes, reality television's biggest lover of props, he's been known to bust out his various CMA awards, added some new ones to his bag.  Is that a good reason to choose a coach?  Some of the contestants thought so and picked Blake, based solely on the fact that he is the winningest coach.  I'm not sure if this is the best idea.  So, who made some impressions?  Hit the jump to find out.

Ray Boudreaux, 25, started things off.  He mows lawns for a living and has never been on a plane.  When he opened his mouth and sang the first few bars of Bill Withers' "Use Me", I was not prepared for what I heard.  I was a big fan of his voice.  It was a nice old school soul/R&B voice.  "Swampy" was a great adjective for his voice.  Cee Lo and Blake battled hard, but Blake and his trophies scored the first contestant of the night.

Lina Gaudenzi, 23, is a former model, who now wants to be a singer.  I mean, if Paris Hilton can try to do it twice, I guess this chick can, too.  Lina decided to sing Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide."  It was a good fit for her voice, which sounded to me like a cross between Stevie Nicks and Allison Goldfrapp.  Overall I was left with a feeling of ambivalence, which is not the best.  Also, her weird, goat sounding vibrato was not my cup of tea.  Be that as it may, Team Xtina scored their first vocalist of the night.

16-year-old Juhi thinks that she is cool enough to have only one name.  Wrong.  Sorry, sister.  Juhi chose to sing Duffy's "Mercy".  I wasn't really feeling it.  It's not that she had a bad voice.  It was actually pretty good, but she has the same issues a lot of young singers who go on shows like these have.  You can tell that she has watched a lot of divas like Xtina and has picked up a lot of their bad habits.  The whole performance seemed really fake and too cutesy.  Her vocal was really affected and inauthentic.  Also, she claimed to be a big fan of Nirvana and Sublime, but she sang a Duffy song.  Maybe Cee-Lo can straighten her out.

Timyra-Joi, 15, was the polar opposite of Juhi.  She chose Alicia Keys' "Girl On Fire."  You could tell that she was nervous, but in this case I think it really helped her.  She seemed her age and her voice was pretty fantastic for someone so young.  When she belted it out, she sounded the best, but you could tell that she had picked up some tics from other singers that weren't the best.  It wasn't a huge surprise when  Timyra-Joi decided to join Team Xtina.

Monika Leigh, 28, was one of the more interesting vocalists of the night. She seemed super annoying at first, but as her pre-package continued I started to like her more and more.  When she busted out with B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" I was pretty much in love with her.  I was not prepared for the voice that came out of her.  I loved the blues-y rock tone of her voice.  I loved her inflection and she was right on pitch the entire time.  What I'm not quite sure about is her decision to join Team Blake.  I think that Monika was influenced by Blake's trophies.  I'm afraid that Blake will do to Monika what he did to Cassadee Pope.  He will turn someone from a pop/rock or in this case blues/rock singer into a country singer.  If Monika is cool with that, then she made the right decision.

Next up was 24-year-old Briana Cuoco.  If that last name sounds familiar, it should.  Briana is the personal assistant and sister of Big Bang Theory star, Kaley Cuoco.  I can only assume that the coaches were aware of who Briana was and that is how she made it through.  Her rendition of Lady GaGa's "You and I" was pretty terrible.  I'm not sure if this was the right song for her.  She was running out of breath and her voice virtually disappeared during the lower parts of the song.  She sort of recovered on the high notes, but nothing could help the weird way she was pronouncing some of the words, almost like they had too many syllables.  She ended up scoring a slot on Team Xtina.

Ugh.  The less said about George Horga, Jr, 16, the better.  The nicest thing I can say that he sounded like a low-rent Bruno Mars on the singers "Treasure.  He scored a slot on Team Cee Lo.

We were treated to snippets of three singers that made a team.  Anthony Paul is on Team Cee Lo, Cilla Chan is on Team Blake, and Jacob Poole is on Team Xtina.

Preston Pohl, 26, closed out the night with a (pardon the expression) electrifying rendition of MGMT's "Electric Feel."  There was something about Preston that just grabed me from the beginning.  He has a great personality, he picked a great, unexpected song that he was able to make his own and I don't blame the judges for fighting tooth and nail for him.  In the end, he landed a spot on Team Adam, which I think is a perfect fit.

So, what did you guys think?  Was there anyone who got dissed that you think should have made it through?  Who do you think was least deserving of a spot on a team?  Let me know in the comments.
