The Voice, Episode 5: "The Blind Auditions: Part 5"
It's getting down to the wire on The Voice. The coaches only have a few slots left. They are being pickier and they are fighting harder for the vocalists that they really want. They are pulling out all the stops to pitch woo, including making the performance all about them. I'm looking at you Xtina. Let's take a look at the talent from the last night of blinds.
First up is 20-year-old, Matt Cermansky. We are treated to a kind of embarrassing video of him singing on the toilet as a tot. This is Matt's second time auditioning. His choice of "Have a Little Faith in Me" left me shaking my head. It's a simple song and doesn't really showcase your voice. I did like the dusky, raspy quality of his voice. Second time was the charm since Matt landed a spot on Team Adam.
Tamara Chauniece, 23, was next on stage. She sang one of my favorite songs, "1+1." Tamara started off strong, but she needs to work on her breath control. She was either wheezing near the end of a phrase or taking a big gulp of breath right in the middle of one. The multiple runs she was doing were not helping things. She was clipping the ends of words and the runs were not helping her with her breath control. She did get Xtina and Cee Lo to turn and ended up nabbing a spot on Team Cee Lo.
Brandon Chase, 20, came out and sang Hunter Hayes' "Wanted." It was serviceable and pleasant. Not anything spectacular. He sort of sounds like the male version of Taylor Swift. I'm not sure if that is a compliment or not. He seems destined to be Battle Rounds cannon fodder. He did earn a spot on Team Blake.
Flower deliveryman Lupe Carroll, 26, really impressed me. He came out and sang "If I Were a Carpenter." It was really great. He sounds like a legit old school folk singer along the lines of Woody Guthrie. I really think there is a niche for him and a voting base. All he needs are some great songs and the right coach, which I definitely think he picked when he became a member of Team Cee Lo.
What is up with these chicks with one name? Firs there was Juhi, now there is 25-year-old, Grey. Grey was a lot like her namesake. She was sort of one note, forgettable. She colored competently in the lines of Kelly Clarson's "Catch My Breath", but I'd be surprised if she made it to the live shows. Welcome to Team Adam, Grey.
Michael Lynch, 27, had been getting so much play during the promos, mainly due to the "impromptu" duet between himself and Xtina that you already knew he was going through and who his coach was going to be. It was a little annoying and off putting. That being said, Michael's rendition of "Bailamos" was very nice. The guys is definitely smooth. I think being a Latin singer will give him a little bit of an edge. I thought for a minute that Xtina was going to shove him off stage so she could have the spotlight all to herself during their ditty. Oh, he's on Team Xtina. Duh.
Brian Pounds, 24, had good ole country boy written all over him. His version of "Wagon Wheel" worked well. He had a crystal clear country voice and his pitch was tight. He is definitely Team Blake material.
Ending the night was bartender Sean "Big Sexy" Smith, 32. His rendition of Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried" was not the night's most impressive vocal, but Sean seems like a nice, good natured guy. His personality definitely overshadowed his voice, but he was still able to snag the final slot on Team Cee Lo.
So, that's it. The blinds are done and next week we're on to the battle rounds where the steals will be in play. Who are you guys excited about? Did anyone watch the clip show? Let me know in the comments.
