The Carrie Diaries, Episode 4: "Fright Night"
Carrie's newfound love of Manhattan hit a bump in the road Monday night. Carrie and Walt headed to Manhattan to attend Larissa's Halloween party, dressed as Princess Di and Prince Charles. It was at this party that Carrie saw the dark side of the city. It started out well enough. Carrie was able to spend Halloween away from her typical responsibilities, like taking care of the delinquent Dorrit. She's also ready for a break in avoiding Sebastian after their break up. So, when Larissa invited her to her fabulous Halloween party, Carrie was there and Walt was more than happy to join her. Apparently, Halloween was his and Maggie's holiday, so he is ready to get away as well.
The besties head to Manhattan and immediately realize that they are way overdressed for this particular bash. Most people are wearing not very much and the looks on the teens faces are priceless. Immediately, they are greeted by Interview columnist, Bennett, and Walt's idol. Sparks fly. Carrie is oblivious to said sparks. Apparently, her gaydar is not as finely tuned and it would one day become. Walt doesn't seem to notice it either, but that may just be willful ignorance on his part. Carrie also takes a liking to Bennett and attempts to pseudo stalk him, but not before Larissa shows up, drops two ecstasy pills in each teens hand and instructs them to down them. I was hoping for a drug a little more '80's like cocaine or heroin, but after last week's vagina centric ep, I'm guessing that those will show up later on down the road. Carrie drops hers on the ground, but Walt takes his.
It becomes pretty clear early on that Carrie's vacation from responsibility will be short lived. Larissa has taken LSD with her ecstasy and believes she is a bird. Carrie leaves Walt with Bennett and runs off to stop her from jumping off of the roof. Later, Carrie has to stop a CATS reject from molesting Larissa while she is passed out. Carrie and the audience are shocked when the guy doesn't stop immediately after Carrie and Bennet confront him. Man, drug use and attempted date rape all in one episode. Edgy.
It was just as heady when Walt and Bennett went outside to chat. They were getting along and the chemistry was there, so Bennett made his move kissing Walt. To say Walt couldn't deal, was an understatement. He tells Bennett he is a girlfriend back in Connecticut, an excuse made by many a gay boy, just replace Connecticut with any state or country. After running away, Walt stumbles upon an attempted gay bashing and sticks up for his fellow queers. This almost admittance shakes Walt to his core so he goes back home and beds Maggie. I'm not sure this will do anything for Maggie's already diminishing self-esteem.
Speaking of Mags and Mouse, they go to Sebastian's Halloween party to keep an eye on things. Mouse ends up getting high and bonding with Sebastian, while Maggie has an uncomfortable confrontation with her cop hook up after her shows up to bust the party. This isn't going to end well for anyone.
At the end of the episode, Carrie found Sebastian with Mouse on her doorstep and they kind of had a conversation. Progress, right?
