70th Annual Golden Globes Predictions

70th Annual Golden Globes

I am a sucker for awards show season, so of course, I am ridiculously excited for it's official start this Sunday, with the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards.  The GG's are awesome because of the open bar.  Alcohol and celebrities are the perfect mix.  I also enjoy seeing movie stars and television stars co-mingling and I of course love the fashions and to see what table is where.

Another reason to be extra excited is because of the two ladies that are in the photo.  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting this year, so hopes are high that these two funny ladies will help this 3 hour show fly by.

Here are the list of nominees in the major categories and who I think will win and who I think should win.

Best Motion Picture - Drama
Argo
Django Unchained
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Zero Dark Thirty

Will/Should Win:  Lincoln hands down.  All the movies are great, but Lincoln has it all, great actors, great script, great direction.

Best performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
Richard Gere, Arbitrage
John Hawkes, The Sessions
Joaquin Phoenix, The Sessions
Denzel Washington, Flight

Will/Should Win:  Daniel Day-Lewis.  This is pretty much a no-brainer.  Day-Lewis channels Lincoln rather than just impersonates him.  There are some really great performances in this category, especially Joaquin Phoenix, but this year the award belongs to Day-Lewis.

Best performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Marion Cotillard, Rust & Bone
Helen Mirren, Hitchcock
Naomi Watts, The Impossible
Rachel Weisz, Deep Blue Sea

Will/Should Win:  Jessica Chastain.  Full disclosure I have not seen any of these movies, mainly because Zero Dark Thirty doesn't start here until Friday, but the critical buzz surrounding Chastain's performance as the CIA analyst who spearheads the hunt for Osama Bin Laden is deafening.  The spoiler in the bunch is Naomi Watts who is also garnering some pretty major buzz for her role as an injured mother after the tsunami.

Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Les Miserables
Moonrise Kingdom
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Silver Linings Playbook

Will Win:  Les Miserables.  Les Mis is the type of movie that awards show like the Golden Globes love to honor.  It is directed by a guy who won an Oscar not too long ago and it is a great musical in a musical category.  Seems like a sure thing to me.
Should Win:  Silver Linings Playbook.  This is a movie that I think kind of sneaks up on people.  The performances are great, the story tugs at your heart without being cliche.

Best performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Emily Blunt, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Dame Judi Dench, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Maggie Smith, Quartet
Meryl Streep, Hope Springs

Will/Should Win:  Jennifer Lawrence.  Jennifer turns in a fantastic performance as a women badly damaged by the death of her fiancĂ©, who tries to find love with someone equally as damaged.  The only spoiler here could be Meryl, because, like most people, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves them some Streep.

Best performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Jack Black, Bernie
Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables
Bill Murray, Hyde Park on Hudson
Ewan Macgregor, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Will Win:  Hugh Jackman for his portrayal of the convict turned foster father Jean Valjean.  Jackman went through an amazing transformation and sings live while turning in an emotional performance.  It's a hat trick that will most likely be recognized by the HFPA come Sunday.
Should Win:  Bradley Cooper.  Jackman is great, but I would prefer to see Cooper take the statue.  Cooper does career best work here.  I feel like he plays a lot of the same types of characters, pretty much cocky jerks.  His character in this movie is the same, but not romanticized.  It's like what if his character from The Hangover existed in real life.

Best performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Amy Adams, The Master
Sally Field, Lincoln
Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
Helen Hunt, The Sessions
Nicole Kidman, The Paperboy

Will Win: Anne Hathaway.  Have you heard her sing "I Dreamed a Dream" in the movie's trailer?
Should Win:  Sally Field.  Check out the review of Lincoln on this blog for all the reasons why.

Best performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Alan Arkin, Argo
Leonardo DiCaprio, Django Unchained
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln
Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained

Will/Should Win:  Tommy Lee Jones.  Reasons why.  Duh.  Check out the review.

Best Director - Motion Picture
Ben Affleck, Argo
Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained

Will/Should Win:  Steven Spielberg.  Lincoln.  'Nuff said.

Best Television Series - Drama
Boardwalk Empire
Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
Homeland
The Newsroom

Will/Should Win:  Homeland.  This show is having a moment and after sweeping the major television awards at the Emmys, expect a repeat at the Globes.

Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical
The Big Bang Theory
Episodes
Girls
Modern Family
Smash

Will Win:  Modern Family.  Sometimes awards shows get stuck on something and they just can't get off of it.
Should Win:  Girls.  Lena Dunham has created a divisive, funny, real show about twentysomethings trying to find their way while being in their twenties and being selfish.

Best performance by an Actor in a Television Series  - Drama
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Damian Lewis, Homeland

Will/Should Win:  Damian Lewis.  Not even Bryan Cranston and Jon Hamm can stop the Homeland juggernaut.

Best performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama
Connie Britton, Nashville
Glenn Close, Damages
Claire Danes, Homeland
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey
Juliana Margulies, The Good Wife

Will/Should Win:  Claire Danes.  Sorry, ladies, but Angela Chase has this one in the bag.

Best performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (side note:  not sure why they lump all these actors and actresses into one category.)

Max Greenfield, New Girl
Ed Harris, Game Change
Danny Huston, Magic City
Mandy Patinkin, Homeland
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family

Will Win:  Mandy Patinkin because he is in Homeland.
Should Win:  Max Greenfield because he took a character that could have been just a one note, groan inducing douchebag, into a lovable, sympathetic guy that you root for sometimes while you are mocking him.

Best performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Hayden Panetierre, Nashville
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
Sarah Paulson, Game Change
Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Will Win:  This is a tough one for me but I'm going to go with Maggie Smith.  I have never watched Downton Abbey, judge me in the comments, but she seems like who the members of the HFPA would recognize.
Should Win:  Archie Panjabi.  Panjabi consistently kills it and she has been elevating the lackluster material she's been given so far this season and if that doesn't deserve an acting award, I don't know what does.

Best performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical
Zooey Deschanel, New Girl
Lena Dunham, Girls
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Will Win:  Julia Louis-Dreyfus.  She took home the Emmy last year and I wouldn't be surprised if she took this one too.  This is the toughest category because a strong case could be made for any of these funny ladies to walk away with the award.

Best performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Louis C.K., Louie
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Will Win:  Jim Parsons because with Sheldon Cooper he has created one of television's newest iconic characters.
Should Win:   Louis C.K.  He writes, produces, directs, he pretty much does everything.  I'm surprised he doesn't act the other parts too.  Plus, it's funny as hell.

All this, plus, Jodie Foster will be receiving the Cecil B. Demille Award.  So, tune in to NBC Sunday at 8/7c to see if any of my predictions come true and then feel free to come back here and mock me about all the ones I got wrong.
