TV Recap: MonA's Not Going Anywhere

Pretty Little Liars, Episode 15: "Mona-Mania!"

Tuesday night's Pretty Little Liars continued MonA trying to integrate herself back into Rosewood High society and prove to the Liars that she is no longer working against them.  One is going better than the other.  I'll let you guess which is which.  There were lots of developments on the Byron front, but tonight's episode felt more like filler, especially after the previews for next week showed that Spencer will be learning Toby's big secret.  So, here's what went down during "Mona-Mania."

They are really pushing the whole "Byron may be Allison's killer" thing.  Byron is acting extra sinister.   He is officially the creepiest character on the show and that is saying something.  That is one of the funniest things about this show.  It's a lot like Toby.  Now that Byron is under suspicion he can't make a normal facial expression.  He is making cryptic comments.  It's hilarious.  All of this tells me that he is, more than likely, not the killer.  That's not to say that he didn't have anything to do with it, but I doubt he pulled the trigger.  Byron comes to Aria while she is watching an old film noir.  He apologizes for accusing her of having anything to do with Meredith's accident.  The real culprit came forward.  Aria is confused but not really accepting her dad's apology.  He spoils the ending of the movie and then leaves.  What a dick.  Was that necessary?

Aria talks to Ella about the night that Allison died.  Ella tells her that she and Byron had planned a romantic night with wine.  Byron plied her with alcohol though knowing that she would pass out after a couple of glasses.  Looking back on it now, Ella thought it was strange he was encouraging her to drink since he knew that would happen.  Aria realizes that Daddy Dearest could have snuck out without her mother knowing.  Then there is Allison's Diary.  The girls go back to Harold's hole and find that it is cleared out.  They also find a blank diary with a message from A. That's fine, though, because they have the pages that Aria tore out, right?  Wrong.  Aria hid the pages in one of her boots and they are gone.  The Liars are desperately trying to find them when Byron appears at Aria's door.  Seriously.  This dude is a creeper on par with the staff at Downton Abbey.  He asks them what's going on and they quickly make up a story about looking for Aria's missing boot.  Before he leaves, he tells them how he remembers how Aria used to hide her Halloween candy in her snow boot from her brother.  Once he leaves, Aria shuts the door and tells the girls, "He knows."

So, you think that would be enough Byron creepiness for one episode, yeah?  Not a chance.  Aria overhears an argument Byron is having with Meredith.  It sounds like she is confronting him for going through Aria's things.  Aria seems him grab Mer's arm, before she takes off.  Aria tracks her down and Mer confesses that she knew about Allison's blackmailing and that Byron was going to see her on the night she disappeared.  Meredith helps Aria get the diary pages back.  Aria and Meredith?  Allies?

Emily had a bit more to do this episode.  She noticed that Paige was being distant with her since the Halloween incident.  Paige initially told her that it was her parents being strict.  On their way to a party, they get a flat and Paige confesses that she is scared, like any sane person would be.  Emily goest to change the flat and she sees a figure in a hoodie.  Emily chases after the hoodie but he gets away.  Close call, Toby.  That whole scene just demonstrated how much the ladies have changed in two and a half years.  In the beginning, they would have reacted like Paige.  It's nice to see them being more take charge.

It turns out the bike tire that A loosened at the end of the last episode belonged to the academic decathlon captain.  Spencer has mixed emotions about this because she was running against him.  Now she is unopposed, or so she thinks.  At their next meeting, Spencer finds out that MonA has joined the team and that she is running against Spencer.  The vote results in a tie and the girls will compete in a quiz off to determine the winner.  This is probably the lightest segment of the episode, which was nice. Spence is ridiculously confident, so you pretty much know immediately that she'll lose.  Which she does, on a question that she answered perfectly when practicing with Toby.

Hanna learned from Lucas that he was the one who set the shed to blow, in order to scare MonA.  He admits to helping her and that he told her that he was done.  He suspects that she is the one that tried to run him down on his skateboard.  Little does he know, it was Toby who was behind the wheel.  Hanna confronts MonA after Spencer's loss and tells her she knows that she is still A and she'll stop her.  Smart move.  See, like I said before, so brazen now.

The episode ended with A hiding two masks in the woods.

So, that's it.  What did you guys think?  Is Byron acting too guilty?  Are you as excited as I am for Spencer to find out the truth about Toby?  Sound off in the comments.
