TV Recap: The Second Season Premiere of Girls

Girls, Episode 1: "It's About Time"

The second season of newly minted Golden Globe winning comedy Girls premiered last night with everything you've come to expect from creator/star, Lena Dunham.  There was awkward sex, awkward conversations, and twenty something selfishness, all of it feeling ridiculously real.  When we left the ladies last year, they were all in a state of flux.  Main girl Hannah asked ex boyfriend now gay friend, Elijah to move in, much to the dismay of boyfriend Adam, who expected to be asked.  He was upset that she chose someone else after she had pursued him all season long.  After a fight in the street, Adam was hit by a car and refused to let Hannah ride to the hospital with him.  Virginal Shoshanna smoked crack by accident and let Ray pop her cherry.  After some aggressive flirting from an artist and breaking up with boyfriend Charlie, Marnie still couldn't decide what she wanted.  So, she made out with Bobby Moynihan at Jessa's wedding.  Oh yeah, Jessa got impulsively married to Thomas-John (Chris O'Dowd), a douchebag who had previously tried to have a three way with her and Marnie.

Just like my PLL recap, let's take a look at the significant developments that each girl went through starting with:

Hannah:  Hannah is enjoying living with gay ex-boyfriend Elijah (Andrew Rannells).  They are great roommates, holding a moving in party, and planning theme nights like fondue night, a craft night, as long as they keep all the craft stuff in one area of the apartment, and of course, a French salon.  She is having a casual fling with a guy, Sandy, who works at a book store that she is also working at.  Her record store fling is played by Childish Gambino aka Community's Donald Glover.  It's nice to see Hannah trying to have a normal relationship with a guy who seems genuine.  It's also good to know that Lena Dunham is still cool with being naked.  Watching Glover talk dirty to Hannah and her just repeat everything he says to her was hilarious and awkward and perfect.  Hannah and Marnie's relationship is still a little strained since she moved out.  Marnie tries to talk to her about it, but Hannah just blows off her concerns and kind of devalues what she has to say.  After Elijah's boyfriend, George, has a drunken outburst, he convinces Hannah to get rid of him.  She gets him outside and then runs back in and locks him out.  Of course, this hurts Hannah more than it hurts George.  She tries to articulate this too him from behind the locked gate, but he is having a hard time seeing her point of view.  Even though Hannah is having casual sex with this guy, she has not divorced herself from Adam.  She still feels guilty and responsible for him getting hit by a car and breaking his leg, so she has been going over to his house and helping him.  She doesn't understand that what she is doing with Adam is wrong and selfish.  She knows that she is leading him on, but she doesn't stop.  Adam is like a little kid with no filter.  He lays it all out for her, tells her that he still loves her, but she still won't be honest with him.  Hannah chooses this time to tell Adam that she doesn't want to be with him.  He won't accept it and tells her all the things that she told him earlier, how he should never let her break up with him.  She tries to tell him that she changed her mind, but he still won't let it go.  She tells him she is sick of being selfless and doesn't want to see him anymore.  Then she storms out and heads over to Sandy's.  She says she is there to borrow his copy of The Fountainhead.  He goes to get it and she gets naked, crawling into his bed.  All things that she told him earlier on in the episode that she wouldn't do. Way to go, Hannah.

Marnie:  Marnie is on her way to have lunch with her boss, who let's it slip that she is being fired... er, "downsized."  Marnie is shocked that she is being let go and the guy who spilled Yoohoo on a print is not.  Her boss explained that she "fucked" him so he could sue.  It was a lousy print anyways.  Marnie has lunch with her mom, played by Mrs. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson.  Meeting Marnie's mom gives you a lot of insight into why Marnie is the way she is.  She tells Marnie that she "looks 30" and "like a Macys' Thanksgiving Day parade float, big heads on tiny bodies."  Marnie tries to get her mom to stop but she refuses.  She is sleeping with a cater waiter and wants Marnie to treat her like a friend.  At Hannah and Elijah's party, Marnie runs into Charlie.  He is waiting for his new girlfriend, Audrey to get out of the bathroom.  There is some awkward ex banter until Audrey emerges asking about pot.  Later, Marnie sees Audrey and Charlie fighting as she leaves.  She pretends that she didn't and another awkward convo ensues.  After everyone has left, Elijah and Marnie are singing a duet of "Building a Mystery."  Elijah admits to Marnie that he's not sure about George, who is paying for everything.  One thing leads to another and Marnie and Elijah are attempting to have sex.  Since, Elijah is gay it doesn't work out well.  Marnie tries to console Elijah telling him that he doesn't need to pretend to be anyone he's not.  He replies neither do you.  Shaken, Marnie leaves and heads to Charlie.  She tells him she just needs to sleep beside someone.

Shoshanna:  The ex-Virgin is trying to cleanse herself of all things Ray.  She obviously still likes him, but she is trying to be Carrie Bradshaw and soldier on.  She is the first to arrive at Elijah and Hannah's party, asking about Ray.  Speaking of Shoshanna, was there anything more sad or awkward then poor Sho, singing Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" to a room that could care less?  Ray finally corners Shoshanna in a bedroom.  He tells her that she is annoying and he can't stand her Emoji texts, but he loves her light and is drawn to her.  What a sweet guy.  They end the episode making out passionately in the coat room.

Jessa:  Jessa and Thomas-John are seen  briefly at the end of the episode returning from their honeymoon?  A trip?  Who knows, but half of Jessa's hair is braided.  They get in the cab and Jessa attempts to tell the cabbie where to go, before realizing she has no idea where her new husband lives.  This leaves the couple in a fit of hysterics.

So, what did you guys think of the season premiere?  Surprised at how great Andrew Rannells looked naked?  Hoping that Donald Glover will follow suit?  Is that just me?  Do you think Adam and Hannah will get back together?  How about Marnie and Charlie?  Are Shoshanna and Ray meant to be?  Sound off in the comments.
