The Thing I Am Most Excited For In... January

RuPaul's Drag Race
Season 5

On January 28th, the best reality competition show on television returns.  That's right, hunties, 14 new queens are out to prove that they have the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent to follow in the footsteps of Ms. Paul herself.  What makes Drag Race so great is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It blatantly rips off everything from America's Next Top Model to American Idol and does it with a smile.  Ru is the other component that makes the show so great.  He isn't afraid to read (be snarky), but you can tell he genuinely cares about every one of "his girls."

The dolls competing for the title of America's Next Drag Superstar this season are an eclectic bunch who all seem to have one thing in common.  They are all very fishy queens, which basically means that they all look very feminine.  There are two cast members that I'm going to be watching very carefully.

The first is Alaska Thunderfuck.  He is the boyfriend of season four winner, Sharon Needles.  He's auditioned all five years and is finally on the show and ready to show what he can do.  We saw Alaska at the Garden before Thanksgiving and she was definitely a fierce, funny, campy queen.  It'll be interesting to see if Alaska can follow in Sharon's footsteps and take this year's crown.

Then there is Detox Icunt.  She starred in a video that went viral last year.  It also starred season 4 DQ'ed queen, Willam, and Vicky Vox.  It was called Chow Down at Chick Fil A.  A video by drag queens endorsing the homophobic company.  It's hilarious and Detox really shines in the video.  I'll be interested to see if she brings the funny to Drag Race this year and if that's enough to snatch the crown from the rest of these bitches.  Here is the Chow Down video, Detox is the queen who does the "Waterfalls" style rap.

The other 12 queens competing are:  Alyssa Edwards, Coco Montrese, Honey Mahogany, Ivy Winters, Jade Jolie, Jinkx Monsoon, Lineysha Sparx, Monica Beverly Hillz, Penny Tration, Roxxxy Andrews, Serena ChaCha, and Vivienne Pinay.

Once again, the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race premieres Monday, January 28th at 8 o'clock on Logo.  Or, if you're like me and have Mediacom, that doesn't carry Logo, Drag Race and Untucked, the behind the scenes show that follows, are typically available Tuesday mornings on logotv.com.

Here is a trailer for the upcoming season.
